Yes, that would have been a better story. Especially if that Hermione learned some hard lessons about limits and respecting other people's autonomy.

It would have been a better story if anyone other than characters who aren't supposed to be sympathetic ever learned a hard lesson about anything.

But yeah, it's sad to see glimpses of what could have been with an author who was willing to take a few more risks and really think things through.

She lost me at the precise moment she used "girly" as an insult.

That's an excellent article. Yay for Hermione Granger!! What a pity she had to take a back seat to Rowling's limp unheroic protagonist.

If Rowling had written this story I doubt she would have become so famous. I remember several children's books that were far better than hers (sadly I don't remember their titles). They never got the attention that HP did.

Where's the portal to that alternate universe? I love how from the description it seems like the issue might be that Dumbledore fell in love with a younger man, not that he fell in love with a younger man. But there should totally be alternating viewpoints with Neville, or a spinoff series for him. He could be the pureblood kid who knows the system from the inside (I bet he knows a lot of wizarding history, which could prove useful) and wants to change things while Hermione is the outsider who sees things insiders might miss - it would be a good balance.

Is this man meant to be Sirius or Lupin or someone else?

No idea. Maybe a recovered Gilderoy Lockhart, since Dumbledore apparently liked dashing blonds.

The irony is that rewriting the series as Hermione Granger and the..... could work, in that the nominal hero turned out to be just about irrelevant. His Chosen One status is a gigantic bluff. Ultimately, what makes Harry the hero is Voldemort's mistaken belief that he's important and must be destroyed, when in fact he's a small part of VM's own life support system. If Harry had died before DH Hermione, Ron, Snape and Dumbledore could have won the war without him.
