What do you consider to be the best HP fics, the ones that are especially memorable or exceptionally well-written? I feel like I'm running out of good stuff to read, but I'm sure there's more out there. All lengths, ratings, pairings, etc. are acceptable. Please also feel free to advertise your own stories.

ETA: Don't panic if your response doesn't appear right away. Livejournal is making me approve any comments that include hyperlinks.

ETA2: WIP's are also fine.

Oh, that's hard. There are so many good fics.

If I had to recommend just one fic, it would be perverse-idyll's The White Road. I was gaping in awe at the writing for days afterward, and it converted me from flat-out hating the idea of Snarry to being a regular reader of Snarry.

Also good:

Anything by amanuensis - be warned, it's all dark and disturbing, but so so good. I especially recommend Act of Faith, Sovay and the Snape/Black hatesex pieces - http://amanuensis1.com/

samvimes' Stealing Harry universe, a nice AU saga with gen, slash, and het elements (responsible for my Severus/Tonks and Sirius/Remus obsessions), Sweet Home (Remus/OMC), and Acts Infernal (Harry decides to rescue Sirius from death, and encounters Tom's good side, along with a host of other characters).

For Severus/Hermione/Lucius plotty, comedic, scheming goodness there is shiv's The Beginner's Guide to Breeding Peacocks and dickgloucester's A Taxing Affair.
http://sshg-exchange.livejournal.com/140574.html
http://sshg-exchange.livejournal.com/150882.html

For ruthless postwar Hermione, S.Rebeiro's Caveat Inimici.

For Harry/Draco goodness, Emma Grant's Left My Heart series (link to first story, the rest are there too)
http://www.queerasjedi.net/emma/fic/viewstory.php?sid=63&warning=1

For Severus/Hermione postwar adventures with plenty of snark and bad guys, abby's The Other Side of Darkness and sequel.
http://www.witchfics.org/abby/tosod.html

For classic ensemble adventure AUs, Arsinoe de Blassenville's The Prefect's Portrait and The Golden Age. Her The Best Revenge and sequel are a nice take on the 'Snape saves Harry from the Dursleys' cliche.

For excellent Severus mentors/adopts Harry fic, Aspen in the Sunlight's A Year Like None Other series is excellent, and there are several multichapter fics plus a few oneshots. Fairly evil Lucius.
http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=5036

More Severus mentors Harry, with with a rather unique take on Snape's living situation outside Hogwarts (written pre-HBP) - Tary Tory's Hall of the Mountain Kings series.
http://inkstain.inkquill.net/isf/archive/12/hallof.html

Also:
elsa's Taniwha series - http://www.potionsandsnitches.net/fanfiction/viewseries.php?seriesid=21
Branwyn's Chivalry series - http://www.potionsandsnitches.net/fanfiction/viewseries.php?seriesid=41

I have more, but I'll stop here for now. I have some recs posted on my tumblr (click the 'fic' tag), and a lot more to add. I have things besides SS/HG and mentorship fics too, I promise! Haha. If you want more, I'm happy to provide them.

sunnyskywalker: Young Beru Lars from Attack of the Clones; text "Sunnyskywalker" (spandex jackets)
From: [personal profile] sunnyskywalker
Good idea! I have very few fics in my bookmarks, sadly. Here's some. Mostly gen

The Black Owl Percy talks to Hermione after the Chamber of Secrets incident.
Heroes (DVD commentary) I've got the DVD commentary version bookmarked rather than the original. Anyway, young Peter watches Star Wars for the first time.
How We Remember Lupin being a teacher, and some trouble after-effects of Luna's mother's death.
The Made-Up Things "Once upon a time, there were four children, whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. And then all that was left was Susan, who had two daughters. One was named Petunia, and one was named Lily."
Now That the War Is Over A better epilogue, though doesn't that cover just about anything else?
Slander Voldemort has a real cunning plan.
page o'recs A bunch of stories.

And a few of mine, because at least I know they exist and so have links.

Children of Yew Drabble on that unresolved Dementor problem.
The Despairing Girl in the Mirror SW/HP one-shot crossover in which Padme has a conversation with Merope. (What was it about fictional moms dying of plot device that year?)
A Hogwarts Christmas Carol It's really short.
Shadow and Vapor Quirrell drabble.
Weatherby Percy has an interview with Mr. Crouch.

Not actually fic, but Ten Ways to Derail the Harry Potter Series.

I will have to do some digging to find a couple of stories I really loved. Jinx and Rabbit always make me laugh, and I enjoyed their "Another Story about the Dursleys". I think you can find it here: http://www.sugarquill.net/read.php?storyid=588&chapno=1

And I have a few on my blog and on Snapedom, but I think you've probably already read them? Let me know if not, and I'll provide the links. Otherwise, my favorites are Terri's stories, Anne-Arthur's, and Sydpad's wonderful cartoon. You'd need to friend her livejournal in order to see it; otherwise, Jodel has the text and a couple of illustrations on her blog.

AU. Yes, the old Snape retrieves Harry from the Dursleys formula. I just had to write one. Everything changes, because the best revenge is living well. T for Mentor Snape's occasional naughty language. Supportive Minerva

The war is over, and all is well, they say, but the wounds remain unhealed. Bitterness divides the Houses of Hogwarts. Can the first children born since the war's end begin a new era, or will the enmities of their parents be their permanent legacy?

(because I'm lazy, c/p the original reccer, scoradh here)
I was in love with this fic for a very significant (and embarrassing) length of time. Malfoy Instrinsica and the surrounding area seemed so real to me, I thought if I went to England I could find it. And live there. And play pool with the villagers. That is how in love I was. There is something about rural England that just grabs my imagination -- Calendar Girls or anything by Jane Austen epitomises it -- and that AJ could recreate this in a fic is a beauty in my eyes. Very, very plotty, of course -- this is serious fanfiction -- and with lots of OCs (hardly something I am about to object to, naturally). In my view these two points do nothing but make this another lovely little world that I can hide in, with plenty of characters to populate it. Not to mention that the depiction of Draco and Neville's relationship is touching and unique -- although the story does not hinge on it the way most other long fics do.

For a couple of excellent Severus-Harry mentorship, see these two by Theowyn:

Theowyn of HPG. They are AU Y6 and Y7, with great characterization and world-building.

My favorite WIP (well, aside from Terri's) is Caeria's Pet Project SSHG, intelligent Voldie, Arithmancy, interesting House-elves, smart Ron, Dark Harry, creepy and Machiavellian Dumbles.

sam-storyteller's "Alternate" is ok.
http://sam-storyteller.dreamwidth.org/31126.html?#cutid1

Other than that I don't know of any specifically written by men, but I read H/D fairly rarely and am not well acquainted with the authors who write it. I'd try the H/D Worldcup; there's some good fic there, and I'd assume that the major authors of all genders would participate.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!

On the Lam Severus/Percy. Post DH except Severus is alive. A very heartwarming story because aside from the pairing Severus gets much support from assorted war victors.

And in complete contrast Chaos is Come Again SSHG, Marriage Law Challenge (an old challenge that was issued sometime between OOTP and HBP in SSHG circles - a Ministry law forces Hermione and Severus to marry; or in this case, they marry in anticipation of such a law). Not fluffy at all, rather bleak with much politics, intrigue and world-building around wizarding politics, but there is hope in the epilogue.

A few more

Best canon-compliant Harry and Severus achieve an emotional resolution: Branwyn’s “One More Such Victory”
http://www.potionsandsnitches.net/fanfiction/viewstory.php?sid=1414

I put this first because, in my shock and trauma over first reading DH, this is the story that hooked me on Potterverse fanfic. Had Jo written this instead of the Crapilogue, I’d never have looked for fandom.

Great AU’s not already mentioned:

Snarry: Cybele’s “If You Are Prepared”
http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=780

If you want a tragic Snarry, this is it. (If you don’t want a tragic Snarry, read it anyhow. It’s what got me reading Snarry, years before “The White Road” would have. Indeed it’s what got me reading slash, to my bemusement.) Warnings: slash, character death. canon-shafted. If you possess tear ducts, you will cry.

*

Adventure: Elsa2 “The Horse”
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1785390/1/The_Horse

Hogwarts is besieged and cut off from the rest of the WW, Slytherin loses its Head of House in battle against Voldemort’s followers, and Harry and Draco bond in friendship (and Harry and Luna start a courtship) over an injured and irascible black stallion. Best Comrade Millicent and house cooperation) ever! Might I just point out that if someone writes a great Luna or a great Millie Bulstrode, that person is probably a good writer? Elsa2 manages both. Just mentioning!

*

How one of our favorite characters came to commit himself to Voldemort’s cause:
Pasi, “Into the Fold” http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/pasi/ITF.html

—Heck, go read all the rest of Pasi’s while you’re tpver here; they are all excellent. *
Best idealistic-Hermione SS/HG: Caeria’s Pet Project, recced above.

Best grungy SS/HG: (WIP): Bloodcult of Freud, “Seven Preposterous Things”—
http://www.digital-quill.org/viewstory.php?sid=754

which also has a stellar Millie and a very unique take on Wizarding culture.
Warnings: het sex, unattractive characters, alcohol abuse, Azkaban….

Best… Argus Filch? Is that a category?

“Right Nor Wrong” by kelly_chambliss

http://asylums.insanejournal.com/snapelyholidays/39223.html

Author’s Summary: “In Greek mythology, Argus the guardian of Io is sometimes said to have a hundred eyes. In the wizarding world, Argus the caretaker of Hogwarts has only two eyes, but he sees a great deal all the same.”

I defy you to either uncompromisingly hate Argus or to feel sorry for him after reading this, and I’d have thought previously that only one of those two reactions would be possible.

Perverse_idyll, in hir review, said s/he wanted to follow Argus around and listen to his internal comments on the other characters, and so do I!

*

Best Hermione-is-true-to-her-roots (rather than the canon converted-to Gryffindor norms Hermione who evolves into the witch of “Caveat Inimici”):

“In Loco Parentis” by Dolores_Crane

http://archiveofourown.org/works/109558/chapters/151674

Hermione discovers sex, Azkaban, the WW’s oppressive patriarchal base, Mud Pride, and an evil plot masterminded by a competent villain. (Obviously that last detail makes it entirely AU from Jo’s Potterverse, eh?)

AU from the end of OotP: Dumbledore’s dead wrong about how another prophecy will play out, Severus saves the day in the confrontation with Voldemort but Lucius gets the Order of Merlin, and Hermione, Harry, Severus, Tonks, and Hestia Jones end up having to try to save the WW from itself.

After Riddle’s defeat, All was decidedly Not Well.

Harry and Severus end up getting a happy ending; Hermione (and Tonks and Hestia) get a challenging new beginning; Dumbledore gets brushed off as irrelevant.

What’s not to like?

Warnings: Slash and het sex. Azkaban. Language. Bitchy graffiti in the girls’ loo. Serious and controversial issues, addressed seriously.

>> Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Redux by va32h
This is what DH should have been. Fidelius? Fixed. Camping? Cut. Elder Wand? Eliminated. A rational Lupin. Hedwig lives! Slytherin redeemed! Snape doesn't die in such a lame way! The seventh book as I'd have written it. CANON SHIPS. Most canon deaths. <<

It was certainly better than Deathly Hallows, but stuck to it too closely in places. Didn't Hermione still carry out the chilling mind-wipe and don't the characters all come across as very much like girls, even Voldemort?

Should be a great place to ask: Does anyone remember that crackfic where Dean kills Voldemort by dropping a heavy weight on him from a crane, and it turns out the prophecy was really about him?

Also, there were some excellent fics from the Snarry Games, one where in order to destroy the Harrycrux Severus has to poison Harry, very slowly. And one where as a side effect from some protection, after Voldemort's death Harry becomes an unperson and Severus is the only one who remembers him?

Essentially you are saying that Dumbledore was scarier than Voldemort and that may be so, but that doesn't change how Voldemort ought to be depicted in order to keep to sense of the text.

Re: Deathly Hallows redux

How do you think Voldemort should be depicted? With a low voice instead of a high voice? With a Teddy Roosevelt-like "Bully, fellows, let's have at them!" instead of as someone who uses flattery and ceremony and playing followers against each other?

I'm not saying that Voldemort's traits as they are shown (or more likely told) to us are female. I just think it's an odd thing to state that so-called girlish traits are (1) lesser for a particular character or (2) anything that can be defined with great certainty.

I think a lot of villains are actually ambiguous in gender, and authors rely on this to make them unsettling to readers. You might identify a villain as being definitely one gender with all the stereotypes that go with that, but it might not be the case that everyone does.
