welcome entry
Oct. 16th, 2006 03:44 pmThis is
deathtocapslock, a community devoted to snarky/mocking discussion of the Harry Potter series.
We recap chapters, usually in chronological order and one a week, on Fridays, although none of this is set in stone.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to post their own, as well as on-topic HP-related discussion (for instance, our sister community occasionally featured spoilers, HP essays and recaps of the HP movies.)
We love new people, and our community entries are left unlocked so that regular anons and non-members can comment.
This, however, is at the discretion of the posters themselves, and rudeness to any member is not tolerated.
This is a community where people are free to express themselves.
We generally keep a view of characters and plots as fictional and the tools of the author, rather than a more personal view, so anyone who identifies strongly with the author or any character to the point of taking offence at what they see as 'insults' to them would probably be best elsewhere.
We've been around a year so far with no problems, though, so this is pretty much a precautionary warning/note.
We're not the oldest or first community on livejournal to do this, although a core group has remained present from our sister community to here throughout the rereads of 3 books (and counting!)
sistermagpie remains the only member to have completed one, let alone all three, although other contributors so far include
jollityfarm,
q_spade,
sassafras_root,
pacoman, and
biichan with
tora_chan,
samaranth and
slinkhard being presently mainly in the sister communities era of 2005, although hopefully again soon ;)
Other readthroughs on livejournal include:
a_chapter_a_day,
hbpdiscuss,
hbp_chapters,
hbpspork,
hp_essays,
furiosity,
mike_smith and
pauraque.
Their various approaches range wildly, so anyone uncomfortable here has plenty of other options.
I was of two minds whether to list these or not, since with a community of 150+ people, there's no real consensus as to which characters/ships/plotlines are most popular or unpopular, but communities with especially counter-canon attitudes include the character specific
_gingivitis_,
anti_hermionegr,
anti_hg,
dietwinsdie,
wehateharry and the general
reluctant_hpfan.
Lastly, we're always looking for artistic people.
Recently I've been considering the idea of DTCL specific icons, (I got the idea from
babb_icons), quoting recaps and/or commenters to recaps. Illustrations or movie caps could also be used if there was space.
Provided the poster/commenter quoted agreed, both with the idea and on hashing out crediting with the iconmaker; and the icons didn't gain the community too much attention, I think it would be a neat idea, and would love to hear from any graphically inclined members of our community.
Likewise, it might be time for a simple layout around here, and anyone more expert at that than me (which is to say, everyone) willing to offer advice would be very welcome.

Date: 2006-10-16 10:34 pm (UTC)I have a request and I'm sorry if this is out of line. I've long wanted to join up to anti_hg & _gingivitis_ but as I don't really know anybody on LJ to vouch for me as per the rules then I've been left out. I regularly (daily) frequent ARGH and CSTAR at Fiction Alley Park (and again only posted a few times) and would like to see the LJ communities that are along similar lines. Would anyone here vouch for me that I'm not a troll? My main proof of my feelings about this are my post at hbp_wtf: http://community.livejournal.com/hbp_wtf/32345.html#cutid1 I've noticed some of you are joined at there too so if you could help me out, it'd be appreciated! :)
And keep up the good work at deathtocapslock. It's been amusing!
