Pogrebin
MOM Classification: XXX

The Pogrebin is a Russian demon. Of course it is. Russia always has the best demons. Anyway, owing to its large, smooth head it can crouch in such a way that it looks like a really big rock. A Pogrebin will tail a human by staying in their shadow, and if the human turns around, will crouch so that it looks like nothing more than a rock. If a Pogrebin follows a human long enough, the human will fall into despair and may fall to their knees, after which point the Pogrebin will overpower them.

Okay, how does this author know all that? Putting aside for a moment the notion that this is Rowling's book, and she knows everything about the world—this book was supposedly written by a wizard who went and researched these animals. And, this particular entry is strangely specific about the effects that this creature has on its victims (it literally says “when the victim stops walking and sinks to their knees to weep at the pointlessness of it all”--and this is supposedly after being tailed by a Pogrebin for “many hours”). I'm beginning to think that he himself was attacked by one of these monsters when he was traveling in Russia.

The article is quick to point out that the Pogrebin is easy to overcome with simple jinxes or spells such as Stupefy. You can also, apparently, incapacitate it by kicking (thus suggesting to me that this creature has also been around longer than Rowling's idea of it, given the number of creatures in this book that those without magic are—apparently--completely helpless against).

pogrebin

I was kind of freaked out by this creature when I was younger, which is why I was always glad that you could defend yourself against it through nonmagical means.
