Was Harry's year unusually small?

I accepted for years that Harry’s year must have significantly fewer students than normal, because (a) he was conceived at or at least right before the very height of the war, and (b) we see “over a hundred” students in the Great Hall in Snape’s memory of his DADA OWL, which makes it sound like the Marauders’ year was much bigger.
I’m no longer sure that this is such a solid conclusion, however.
First, this wasn’t a war in the same sense as, say, World War II or the Vietnam War, with soldiers off at the front, physically separated from their spouses and lovers. Everyone was home and able to botch their contraceptive charms or potions. Or to actively decide to have children.
Second, we don’t know whether the war looked fierce enough to put people off having babies when Harry was conceived, in autumn 1979. The only deaths we know about are from summer 1981. Also, Harry was born only a month before the cutoff point between his year-cohort and the next, so most of the kids in his year would have been conceived and born earlier than he was. Earlier in 1979, things may have looked tense, but not yet so dangerous that people changed their childbearing plans. If escalating violence did cause a drop in the number of conceptions, it might not have happened until after Harry’s. This could result in Ginny’s year and the one following (or even just the latter) being smaller than average—but not Harry’s. We really have no way of knowing exactly at what date the war might have scared people into delaying childbearing. If it ever did, which leads to…

It seems logical that with violence increasing, wizards would decide not to create children who might suffer from that—but they might be operating from a different set of priorities. I ran across an interesting comment by tonks-is-cool which posits the opposite reaction:
Could some witches and wizards have reacted to the war by deciding to have more children rather than fewer? Was that a factor in why the Weasleys have seven children, for example? Again, we don’t have enough information. But it's possible. And of course, witches and wizards might make different decisions. Maybe the number who decided to put off having children was exactly balanced by those who decided to have more to ensure their line would continue or to provide more fighters for the cause.
Okay, what about those prevented from having children by circumstances outside their control—like dying? What about those who moved abroad to get away from the conflict and had their children outside the Hogwarts catchment area?

For all we know, the Marauders’ year had four sets of twins, and also a bunch of the parents attended the same party where there was An Incident which interfered with their contraception. We could come up with any number of reasons that year might have been larger than average through sheer chance. With such small class sizes, small variations in year-cohort size matter. Having 260 instead of 240 students might not be terribly noticeable, but 70 instead of 40 very much is.
So we can’t conclude anything about normal class size based on the Marauders’ year alone. Nor do I think we can rely on things like Harry’s impression of “two hundred” Quidditch spectators in Slytherin green: again, we have no reason to think he’s better than average at estimating crowd sizes, and anyway that crowd might include relatives or villagers. Okay, let’s arbitrarily assume that the lower years start at 8:00, making 40 available teaching hours. Now at least they get lunch breaks four out of five days per week…
This rules out year-cohorts being split into more than two classes as a regular occurrence. They just cannot fit that many classes into a day. Even one year out of seven having three class sections would be difficult. (At least we know why McGonagall was handing out class schedules after classes had started in HBP: constructing a schedule which lets every student attend all of their classes without conflicts must be a devil of a job. And see why she petitioned the Ministry for Hermione’s time-turner? The girl would have broken the schedule otherwise!)
So, how many students can they teach in one class?
If Harry’s year has 40 students, then teachers do not teach 40 students at once. Otherwise, they would teach Harry’s year in one group instead of making the schedule harder by splitting them.
Harry’s classes all seem to be around 20 students, except for that DADA lesson in OotP when he thinks there are 30 students watching his argument with Umbridge. After years of sitting in classes of 20, Harry can probably tell when there are more than 20 students in the room. Only Gryffindors are mentioned in that scene, so we don’t know which House or Houses they share the class with. If there are 10 Gryffindors and 17 Ravenclaws, maybe there are actually 27 students in the class, and Harry is rounding. (In this case, maybe the teachers could handle 40 students at once, but not 47.) Alternatively, maybe several students from Harry’s year have left Hogwarts by OotP (to home-school or move abroad, maybe because their parents are getting worried that there’s been a murderer or monster running amok every year for four straight years), and this is a class of 33 containing every remaining student in the year. If the latter, at least that would help with the scheduling.
We don’t know which scenario is true. Let’s split the difference and set the maximum number of students in a classroom as 35. That makes 70 about the highest number of students per year which the teachers could handle without massive Time-Turner abuse.
So if the Marauders’ year was over 70, either it was unusually large, or Hogwarts used to have two teachers per required subject and the number of students has been lower enough for long enough that they stopped needing those teachers several years ago. (By “needing,” I mean “is it physically possible to do without them,” not “does it provide the best education for the students and a humane schedule for the teachers.”) They would have to have lost the second set of teachers at least a few years ago; otherwise the retired/laid off/mysteriously vanished teachers would still be news when Harry started school. Students would be complaining that they miss Teacher X, who was so much better than McGonagall/Snape/Binns/etc.
But how likely is that? If the birthrate had fallen so sharply for so long, Ron wouldn’t be saying that wizards would have died out if they hadn’t married Muggles; he’d be saying that they will die out if they don’t all marry Muggles and have lots of babies as soon as humanly possible. Or if the birthrate is fine but half the students who would ordinarily go to Hogwarts had suddenly started homeschooling instead, you’d expect that drastic change to be news too. In Rita’s articles as evidence of Dumbledore’s failure as a headmaster, for example.
Furthermore, everyone speaks of having trouble filling “the” DADA position for the past 30 years. If Dumbledore had spent decades trying to fill two vacant positions, that ought to be notable enough to mention. And it would have been harder for everyone to miss that something odd was happening. We also have no evidence that Merrythought had a DADA-teaching colleague who was the first to fall victim to the curse when Voldemort didn’t get hired alongside them. Everything suggests that there has only been one DADA teacher since at least the 1940s. If the DADA Department had only one teacher while the others had two, this also would be notable enough for someone to mention over the course of six years, probably with the double workload as the reason they couldn’t keep a teacher for longer than a year. It seems more likely that there has only been one teacher per required subject for at least 40 years. (Other than the very, very brief overlap Rowling claims for McGonagall and Dumbledore as co-Transfiguration teachers in 1957 in that Pottermore essay. And let’s not start on the new McGonagall-timeline complications introduced by the FB movies).

Say there would have been 47 students, and they got 40 instead. And maybe Ginny’s year and the one following got hit hardest, and have 34 or 35 students each.
This may not match whatever fuzzy idea Rowling had, but I think it fits what we actually see in the books. As much as anything can match the vague, inconsistent evidence, anyway.

Yes, I proposed something along those lines. If there are only one or two students who take more than 2-3 electives it is easier to give them Time Turners than to make the schedule work out.
Which Houses take classes together? Andwhat about those 31 students in Harry's 5th year DADA class? Interestingly, in POA (I think, the only other possibility that makes sense is OOTP) Minerva comments that everyone in the class is a Gryffindor (when she skips giving them homework ahead of a Quidditch match). Yet in HBP Luna tells Harry that Ginny came to her aid against bullies in Transfiguration class. So is it possible for a teacher to move from the 2 Houses per class section formula under some circumstances(and still make the schedule work)? In that case, it is possible Umbridge taught the Slytherins in Harry's year separately from the other 3 Houses, possibly as a favor to Lucius (he may have wanted his son to actually learn something in his OWL year).
As for the possibility of more than one teacher per subject at the same time - I think in canon the only time we see it is when there are 2 Divination teachers (because Albus is keeping both as assets). And then in Pottermore Rowling claims (or merely implies?) Minerva's initial teaching career overlapped with Albus' (before he became Headmaster). But that is definitely not the typical situation.
Re: Conclusions: I think as soon as one accepts your other idea, that actually quite a few magical children do not attend Hogwarts at all, and thus the size of the wizarding population can be much bigger than what is suggested by the Hogwarts cohort size we have less of a need to have much larger cohorts for anything to start making sense.

Date: 2021-03-18 01:52 am (UTC)(a) they were sharing that class with the Ravenclaws, and there are something like 17 Ravenclaws, so Harry is rounding up when he says there are 30 pairs of eyes on him (reasonable, since most people aren't that precise with numbers once you get over fifteen or so); or
(b) several students have left school by fifth year, either to work or because it's been overrun with monsters and murderers for four years or both, and the class contains the remaining students from all four Houses (which could be 33 or so and Harry is rounding down).
It's hard to know how to factor in passing time when we don't know how long class periods are in the first place, how many class periods they have per subject, how many are single vs. double sessions, whether it changes year to year, or any number of other factors. For example, if they have two single and one double period for a given class, of which they spend 45 minutes for the single and 90 minutes for the double session actually in class (with the remainders of the hours for passing), that adds up to 3 full hours of actual classroom time over the whole week. If it's only one single and one double class, that's only 2.25 hours total in class. But how could we know which is closer to accurate? So I picked 3 hours as a possible amount of time spent actually in class, not as the boundaries of an official class period (which would include passing time, and hopefully a lot given how long it seems to take to get around the castle). But I didn't make that clear.
They might spend more hours in class in lower years and fewer once they get to NEWT level, being presumably advanced enough to be more self-motivated with their studies by then, which would help a bit. But they might not. They don't go to each class every day, and the first-year schedules work out to give them an afternoon off once a week. But the rest is pretty hazy.
The all-Gryffindor class sounds very odd to me, unless there was some schedule weirdness that year that made it easier to cram the other three Houses together for Transfiguration and have Gryffindor by itself. I don't know what that might have been, but it's possible. Or maybe they arranged things that way specifically so McGonagall could give Gryffindors only days off homework before games. Which could allow for Umbridge teaching Slytherins separately for DADA, as you say.
Yeah, I definitely think a lot of problems go away if we assume that Remus is simply mistaken about nearly everyone going to Hogwarts. I find it a lot easier to believe one character got a factoid he's probably never particularly researched wrong than that the teachers are somehow working high-powered lawyer hours for teacher pay for decades on end. Then we can have Harry's year being 40-ish and Hogwarts total having a bit under 300 students, just as it looks, and don't have to figure out how to account for potentially dozens more invisible students in his year, or a secret second set of teachers, or all the teachers using Time-Turners constantly, or Harry's year being half the size of normal with zero notice or comment about [insert tragic war circumstances, which will surely be repeated unless Harry does exactly as Dumbledore says], or anything elaborate. (The Marauders' year could still be larger if necessary just due to normal variation--with "larger" being 60 or so.)
I do think the evidence supports the teachers being pretty tightly scheduled, mind. It makes a lot of sense of how they're never around, don't have office hours, don't notice Luna's housemates stealing her stuff, seem constantly on the verge of snapping (especially McGonagall, who is one of the most over-scheduled), and never have the energy to stop and go, "Wait, do any of these administrative decisions make sense? Is there anything we could do better?" But there's full schedules and then there's "not even magic could explain that."

The thing is, I can't remember that there were ever any joint classes or students from other houses mentioned in any subjects other than Potions, Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures (at least not until after OWLS). I definitely always got the impression that those were the only shared classes until I started thinking about it and realised that there'd have to be at least thrice as many teachers to make that work anywhere in the space-time-continuum...

I mean, even a Hogwarts of 300-ish students requires some suspension of disbelief, because it seems unlikely that they would never run into an irreconcilable schedule conflict, but I can handwave that much. But I just can't believe in a larger student body without a really, really good explanation--and I can't find one. I've been going around in circles for a while, wondering whether I was unfairly dismissing the idea of a larger student body and Harry's year being unusually, extremely small... but nope. I just can't buy it.

I don't believe in a larger student body either, and I know I couldn't tell at a glance wether a crowd was 80 people or 100 or 120.
I've just thought of something else that might have thrown off Harry's impression of the number of students taking the exam in the memory, namely the seating arrangement. Let's say he knows that there are usually almost 300 students in the Great Hall for meals and fitting comfortably at the house tables. Now they're sitting at separate desks, maybe spaced a bit apart from each other to prevent easy copying off neighbours, the Great Hall might look rather rather full even with less than 80 students. And with the first war somewhat brewing at the time, I imagine not many NEWT-students would have dropped DADA either, so there could be more or less two full years there. Whatever difference remains can easily be explained with normal variation.

I could just about see Harry vaguely recognizing him as "whatshisname, that obnoxious guy from the common room I try to avoid." Would it have hurt Rowling's story to do it that way instead of presenting Cormac as this total unknown who suddenly appeared between books?
I think the only person I know who is any good at estimating crowd sizes quickly has been working as an engineer for decades and just has that kind of mindset. Most of us have never needed to develop that skill. After a certain point, it's just "lots." So yeah, when Harry talks about "a hundred" or "hundreds," I think it's reasonable to build in a margin of error--and the bigger the number, the bigger the margin. Especially when he has a reason not to be paying serious attention to numbers because he's distracted with more important things like, "Hey, that's my dad!"
Good point about the seating, too. That probably would confuse the issue.
