I just re-read what Rita wrote after reproducing Albus’s charming letter to his lover.  And it’s instructive, as Rita always is.  Here she is, in all her audience-wooing. muckraking glory:

“Astonished and appalled though his many admirers will be, this letter constitutes proof that Albus Dumbledore once dreamed of overthrowing the Statute of Secrecy and establishing Wizard rule over Muggles. What a blow for those who have always portrayed Dumbledore as the Muggle-borns’ greatest champion!  How hollow those speeches promoting Muggle rights in the light of this damning new evidence!  How despicable does Albus Dumbledore appear, busy plotting his rise to power when he should have been mourning his mother and caring for his sister!”

Rita Skeeter, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, quoted in DH 18.

And there we have it.  What strikes US (or, at least me; I shouldn’t jump in and speak for other Muggles) as unthinkably shocking and horrifying about Albus and Gellert’s youthful fancies is that they quite seriously plotted to set themselves up as total dictators, whatever violence—to body or mind—was required for them to “seize control” and maintain it afterwards.

What Rita expected to astonish and appall her magical readers, conversely, was that Albus “once dreamed of overthrowing the Statute of Secrecy.”

Um.  So. Plot mass murder and absolute, inescapable repression?  Dream of enslaving, both body and mind, all the survivors of your original coup?  MILLIONS of victims?  (Most of them Muggle, by definition.)

And then force your slaves to recite, in unison, that it had all been for their own greater good.  Really.

(In real life, some Western slave-owners actually DID make this argument.  Had they not mercifully caused African natives to be kidnapped and worked [or tortured] to death, said natives might well have gone through their whole lives without ever, perhaps, having received the benefit of learning about Christianity!)

The response of Rita’s Daily Prophet readers to such a program?

Neh.  Boys will be boys, and it’s good to have ambitions.

But.  Plot to overturn the Statute of Secrecy?

How despicable does Albus seem!

Excerpt here.

Maybe Pottermore members can fill us on on what's in the rest of "Rita's" article?

I have to wonder what they have added to the wizarding world's water supply. Remember how wizards used to be fickle creatures, capable of going from hero-worship to deep suspicion and hatred based on a few gossip columns or rumors in the halls? No longer!

As the crowd stampeded, tents were flattened and small children mown down. Fans from all corners of the globe stormed towards the area where members of Dumbledore’s Army were rumoured to have been sighted, desperate above all else for a glimpse of the man they still call the Chosen One.

Since Harry is about to turn 34, this is roughly 16 years after the DA did its thing. That they're still famous for being the DA, and Auroring and whatever else is clearly a distant, secondary consideration, suggests that they haven't really done anything all that newsworthy lately. (I would bet on the cut being from a game of pickup Quidditch with Ron & co. or something equally boring.) Yet they're excited enough to see Harry that Rita can spin it into a stampede?

There must have been nothing happening at all in the WW for the last 16 years. I guess they really do disappear when Rowling isn't looking.

Through his own stupidity and sloppiness, Harry badly cuts his finger on broken glass in the school trunk he hasn’t bothered to thoroughly clean out for six years. I guess I should hope he’s had his tetanus shot, but all I can think is that if he has lockjaw, he won’t be able to whine and pout. (Although usually associated with rusty metal, tetanus is caused by a common bacterium that is found many places. I once read an article written by a woman who got it by stepping on a broken nutshell in her yard.) Read more... )

Much of the tendency of the “Marietta’s True Crime” debate was to put Marietta and Hermione on a moral see-saw. The unspoken premise was, the more justified (or sympathetic) Marietta was in approaching Umbridge and telling her about a certain illegal student organization, the less so was Hermione for “punishing” Marietta by mutilating her, perhaps for life.

(Only “perhaps,” fine. Just as it’s only “perhaps” that Dolores scarred Harry permanently with that Blood Quill. We know from Mad-Eye, Albus, Arthur, Bill, Draco, and Harry himself that magical injuries can leave lifelong scars. But still, it’s not explicitly stated in canon that Harry, fantastically old, died with that scar still on his hand. For anything we know, it vanished one page after its last mention in DH. So no one can accuse Umbridge of scarring Harry for life, right? But in canon, the last we saw, Harry bore “I must not tell lies” engraved into his flesh. In canon, the last we saw of Marietta, she was trying desperately to hide the word “Sneak” blazoned across her face.)

Now, in schoolkid morality, tattling on someone to the teacher is a crime. Tattling on a friend, after explicitly promising not to tell, is the worst crime possibly imaginable!

We, however, are adults, and have larger imaginations.

And Hermione’s betrayal of her schoolfellows (and Hermione’s other crimes) may be judged without reference to Marietta’s transgression.

Hermione is too sensible to bother with straightening her hair on a regular basis. Ron and Hermione are willing to keep the peace for the sake of Harry (and the plot) - oddly mature of them.

Hermione thinks views of giants are 'just' prejudice, and with that she proves how naive she is, just like about the elf issue. Though perhaps a giant that rejected giant culture (whether willingly or under duress) might be considered worthy to save her life.
